Precautions to take with Unexpected Callers?

The easiest way a thief can get into a house or flat is to walk in the door.

There are many types of thief that use this method:

  • The confidence trickster who relies on his/her stories to get inside.
  • Once he/she have been given access he/she may take something when the owner's back is turned.
  • The type who barges in as soon as the door is unlocked.
  • The type who distracts you while their associate breaks in at the rear.

A Checklist to follow when opening your door
Always ask for identification. If you have a chain lock, use it. If you have any suspicion that the caller is not genuine, do not let him/her in.

If you are in the premises on your own always give the impression that somebody else is there with you.

If you have a door-viewer you can check the caller's identity without opening the door.
