Principles a homeowner should keep in mind
- Burglars hate noise and being disturbed by the sound of sirens or the possibility of being heard by neighbours resulting from breaking glass.
- Burglars use methods like cutting small holes if there is a chance of opening a door or window from the inside. Adequate key locks could be fitted to all windows to minimise the risk of forced entry.
- Burglars would find a well lit area less appealing.
- Tall trees or high walls or fences close to the premises would be a definite attraction to potential intruders.
- Homes in remote districts sited some distance from the nearest neighbour or hidden from view are most in need of a sophisticated security system which is linked to a central station for around the clock monitoring.
- If you move into a large estate, there is a risk that every lock provided for homes were a cheap product openable by the same key and offering no security at all.
- Areas like garages or sheds beside the house also need to be protected this could be very tempting for an intruder who has easy access to ladders and other house breaking tools. Many robberies have been made easy by access through an insecure garage door.
