Irish Fire Alarm System types In Ireland, fire alarm systems complying with IS 3218 are required to be designed according to the risk category of the premises to be protected. L or life protection type systems are classified from L1 for the highest risk requiring every part of the premises to be protected by automatic means through L2 where the only areas of recognised and specific hazards are protected, to L3 protecting all escape routes and any adjoining rooms and finally, L4 in which the escape routes only need to be protected.
A type P fire protection system is designed only to protect property and the criteria is therefore more concerned with ensuring not only that vulnerable areas are protected but also that any fire occurring in an unoccupied location will be identified and an alarm raised as quickly as possible in order to ensure minimum delay in effecting countermeasures.
For both L and P type systems it is desirable that, in addition to raising the alarm locally, remote alarm indication facilities should also be considered. Connection by telephone line or radio link to a permanently manned central monitoring station ensures that any fire indication will bring an immediate response when the premises are unoccupied or where high life risk is involved.
However, if connected to the general use telephone line, the system may not function if the line is engaged at the time the alarm is raised. A dedicated line can help to counter such risks and a radio-link back-up adds to the over-all system reliability.
