Manually Activated Alarm Switches Manually activated alarm switches (also available in either the addressable or non-addressable mode) are covered by the British Standard BS 5839 : 1988 Part 2. While these are available for both surface and flush mounting, the former are to be preferred since they are more easily identified in an emergency and are therefore more likely to used, especially in premises to which the general public have access.
The non-addressable type in small single floor locations may be wired as a single circuit in some instances, since by virtue of their having been manually operated, someone knows the location of the fire and can communicate this information to other persons.
