Heat Sensitive Systems For the more extensive detection system requirements, heat sensitive detectors in most cases, now contain both a staticā element which is designed to respond to a specific temperature and a rate of riseā element which responds to any rapid increase in ambient temperature in the vicinity of the detector unit.
The latter facility has been found necessary because the fixed temperature only type units do not respond reliably to slowly developing fires. Despite common usage of dual element detectors, the standard available for heat sensitive units (IS/EN 54: Part 5 1986) relates only to the static element type IS 3218 : 1989 however does acknowledge the existence of dual element heat sensitive detectors.
High temperature type heat detectors for specialist applications are covered by IS/EN 54 Part 8 : 1986. Line type heat detectors although mentioned in IS 3218 : 1989 also have no specific standard at the present time although they are acceptable for incorporation into both Irish IS 3218 and British B.S. 5839 alarm systems.
