Smoke Detection Since most fires occur in domestic dwellings, which do not lend themselves to complex and extensive alarm system installations, it has been recognised for some time that a simple to install self-contained type smoke detection unit is desirable at each floor level of the residence.
These battery operated units usually contain a radioactive sensing element, an integral alarm sounder and the power supply batteries inherent in the electronic circuitry as required by the associated Standard (in Ireland I.S 409: 1988) provision is made for an audible warning to sound automatically when the batteries need to be renewed.
The only factors requiring specific consideration when installing these units are, that if located close to a bathroom or shower, they will react to the presence of steam. Also, if provided at only the lower floor level, they will not detect the presence of smoke on the floors above until very late in the development of the fire.
Conversely, detectors fitted on the upper floor will, unless inhibited by closed doors, detect fire smoke emanating from below since smoke rises. Each of these units also incorporates a test button allowing the householder to make regular checks on the operability of the detector.
