Lenses The choice of camera lense is critical and here again there is a huge selection to choose from. The fixed focal iris lense are only suited for indoor application where lighting conditions are constant. Auto iris or direct drive lense should be used where lighting conditions fluctuate. Some lenses can reduce the effectiveness of the camera in low light conditions. It is essential that the specification of the chosen camera is compatible with those of the lense.
The new generation of cameras have the lense built in and can provide the opportunity to pan and zoom, in other words, one may look at a wide angle picture and electronically move the shutter in order to get a closer view of an object.
In the covert range the lense forms an integral part of the chip board camera. The actual size of the lense ranges from 1mm down to just over 1 cm.
PTZ Cameras: these are fully functional cameras that have the ability to Pan, Tilt & Zoom. The operator can manually turn these cameras to follow subjects and zoom in on them for closer scrutiny. Far to often PTZ cameras are installed and are often ineffective because the operator does not move the camera to fully observe the given area. Fixed camera positions reduce the operator dependence. A combination of Fixed camera positions and one or two PTZ cameras can provide a much more satisfactory result if covering a large area.
