Cameras Monochrome cameras are available from as low as 240-line resolution to 600-line resolution. Sensitivity is the minimum amount of light required to generate an acceptable video picture, this measurement is in foot, candle or lux.
The sensitivity of cameras often determines the minimum level of illumination required. Monochrome cameras generally require a minimum of 1 lux down to .02 lux and with special intensifiers as used for example in the recent Gulf War, can actually provide a picture in virtual total darkness.
Colour cameras generally operate from 330 line to 500-line resolution.
Colour cameras are generally available between 5 and 1 lux. Colour is a representation of the reflection of light. Therefore colour cameras operating in the dark without the aide of sufficient illumination would only provide a blank screen.
Colour cameras, however, provides greater details over monochrome cameras and are ideal for indoor use where adequate lighting is provided.
There is a new range of cameras called Change Over Cameras, which provide a colour picture when lighting conditions are within reasonable levels. These cameras then change over to monochrome (black & white picture) when light levels falls below 1 lux and will provide and acceptable picture down to 0.1 lux.
